7 Examples of Well Written About Pages for Blogs and Websites

Ahhhh yes…the about page– assumed to be one of the most visited pages on a blog (or website for that matter) at least according to the good folks over at Copyblogger

For the longest time, I thought that I was doing an excellent job of writing my about pages. 

You know….

Starting with the standard opening and greetings that include: 

  • Hey there, I’m Kim and welcome to (blah blah blah) 
  • Hello I’m ….. 
  • Hi and welcome….. 
  • What’s up and so forth —> (side note) There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting off your About page this way….

I’ll admit:

When I first started writing content my about page for this blog, I struggled to come up with the right words to add to the page. 

I started writing it up as usual ….

With standard greetings like the ones noted above and a page filled with content that was “all about ME”.    

Before I published the page, I decided to a little bit of research to look for other examples of About Pages that bloggers and entrepreneurs have written and soon realized that I have been going about it the wrong way.   

I then discovered a super simple formula for writing a kick butt about page for this site.  I will give you more deets on this formula later on the post.

Who is a About Page — Really About? 

As I initially stated, I used to think that an About page was well..about ME.  

Not because I’m so into myself or anything, but because I believe that we are all naturally inclined to think that it is.

Well folks, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news…but your About page is not about you.

It’s about the people that you want to attract and visit your website — Say Whatttt??? 

Why did it take me so long to figure this out?  I’m not really sure but I am glad that I figured it out sooner rather than later.

The About Page Formula that Changed My Perspective

As I started searching the internet for examples of About pages, I stumbled across a simple formula + video that changed everything for me.   

This video and formula was created by one of my fav bloggers and entrepreneurs Nikki Elledge brown (The Communication Stylist) and is referred to as “The About Page Recipe”.

In this video, Nikki breaks down all of the essential elements that you will need to add to an About page and how to create a page that connects to your visitors.  

After watching this video and applying the about page recipe that Nikki gives, I was able to quickly create an about page more focused around what I can help small businesses with vs one that is all about ME.

What Information Should You Add to Your About Page?

Some of the most essential information that you should add to your about page include: 

 

1. A statement that explains to your visitors – what’s in it for them.

Typically when a reader lands on your site, they want to know “am I in the right place”?

So:

Some additional questions that you should answer for your visitors are:  Why should they stick around to find out more about you, and what they can expect to learn from you and gain from reading your visiting your site.
 

2. Your bio and background story.

This presents an excellent opportunity to give your readers a chance to learn more about you, your back story and also gives your readers an opportunity to connect with you on a more personable level.

 

3. A picture of yourself.

You would think that folks would automatically add their pictures to their about pages.

But:

I have honestly visited a great deal of sites where the site owner’s picture is nowhere in sight.

In truth, it took me a while before I was comfortable enough with adding pictures to my site. However, I can tell you first hand that it makes a huge difference to your visitors and folks that want to connect with you.

Besides, people connect want to connect with other people – not a weird avatar or even worse, a faceless site. 
 

4.  A call to action.

A call to action simply tells your visitors – this is what I would like for you to do next.

Some examples of calls to action that you can add to your about page can include:

  • Signing up for your newsletter
  • Contacting you for a consultation about your services Or….
  • A link to your product page

Up first is an about page from none-other than Nikki Elledge Brown – aka the Communication Stylist and creator of the about page recipe that I mentioned earlier on in the post.

On Nikki’s about page, she makes it clear that she helps entrepreneurs with their copy writing.
 

2.     Derek Halpern of Social Triggers

Next up, is Derek Halpern – founder of Social Triggers.  Derek’s page reallyyyyy caught my attention.

The first thing that jumped out at me on his about page is that he makes it very clear to his visitors what Social Triggers is all about and what you can expect to learn from his site.
 

3.     Amy Lynn Andrews – of AmyLynnAndrews.com

Amy is a fellow blogger and founder of Amylynnandrews.com did an excellent job of putting together her About page.

I love the fact that she added a 67 Random Things About Me section to her about page.  It’s adds such a nice touch to her page.
 

4.     Don Purdum of Unveil the Web

(friend, mentor and founder) of Unveil the Web.The minute that you land on Don’s About page, his message is crystal clear and asks the question “Is Your Marketing Focusing on the Wrong Things” and the importance of figuring out what business you’re really in.

5.   Hubspot’s About Page

The great folks over at Hubspot (one of my favorite marketing blogs) have done an excellent job I think with their About page.

As you can see, they make it very clear to their visitors that they help entrepreneurs with inbound marketing, sales and lead generation.
 

6.   Julie Harris of Julie Harris Design

Julie of Julie Harris Design – I first came across Julie’s designs and etc via Pinterest and I will be the first to admit, I was blown away by her branding.

As you can see from her about page, she is clearly a branding expert and specializes in helping entrepreneurs with their brand identity.
 

7.  Chris Ducker of ChrisDucker.com

Chris is a well known influencer and entrepreneur in the blogosphere.

As soon as you land on Chris’s about page, you are immediately greeted with a “what you can expect from this website” which is that his website “Will Make You More Productive and Profitable, in Business and Life!”
