7 Quick Design Changes that will INSTANTLY Improve Your Blog!
Do you remember the show extreme makeover? I don’t know why I thought about it as I was putting this blog post together.
If you don’t remember the show (of have never heard of it) here’s the abridged version:
In the show, they give a few very lucky contestants the opportunity to get a complete makeover and overhaul of their looks. We’re talking everything from weight loss, to plastic surgery, to hair…
I used to love that show… But I digress…
Let’s talk about makeovers for a hot second…but from a blog perspective. I will be be the first to tell you that sometimes, it’s little changes here and there that can make all of the difference in the world.
If you’re reading this post, then I am going to assume that you are one of two people:
- You have a blog but you’re not too thrilled with how it looks…
- You’re looking for some additional ways to add some pizazz and “charm” to your blog’s design
Either way….I hope that this post gets your creative juices flowing with ways that you can update your blog …fairly quickly!
But…before we get into the tips… consider this….
3 Things to Keep in Mind As You Makeover Your Blog
#1: Consistency – this is prolly one the biggest things that I see folks doing with DIY design and it’s a topic that I cover in greater length in Blazing Branding. But… consistency with your blog’s design is key! This pretty much means that everything from your blog’s colors to the images that you use should have a similar look and feel to them.
#2: Simplicity – You don’t need a whole lot going on via your blog’s design to make it look good. I have never understood why people think that more is better. If you look at some of the most popular brands out there like Apple and Starbucks, there are maybe a “few” distinct things (design wise) that set them apart. For example, Apple’s products are known for their minimalistic designs. And Starbucks…well “green, white and brown” is what’s used in their logo. That’s it!
#3: Professional Quality Images – This definitely applies to the images that you use and so forth. Using “grainy looking pictures” and images is not a good look at all. If you have images that look like this, it means that they are too small and you need to use a larger sized image. The same thing applies to the freebies and opt-ins that you give away.
How To Give Your Blog a Makeover
Here are a few ways to add some visual interest and charm to your blog – fast!
#1: Add a branded blog post image template to your posts
If you’ve been reading this blog then you know that I use Canva to solve 98% of my design needs.
I even used it to design the blog post image templates that you see below from one of my blog branding kits. It is just a friggin amazing design platform (for non-designers).
A branded blog post image template is an essential image that every blogger should have in their design arsenal. It keeps your posts consistent and gives your content visual appeal.
#2: Update your blog’s color scheme
If you’re not good with pairing colors together, don’t worry about it. You don’t have to be. There are tools out there to help ya like my favorite one: Colorpalettes.net.
I love this resource because it not only gives you color palettes to use, but it also shows you how the colors look together.
#3: Create a simple text logo to add to your blog’s header
I hear it all of the time from peeps in my community stating “I need a logo and I want something that stands out and looks unique”.
“It needs to have a house, a lawn, the sun, the moon and the stars”. Like ummm wait a minute….

#4: Spice up your sidebar with some branded graphics
I think that the sidebar of a blog is one of the most underutilized places on a blog. Using a tool like Canva makes it easy to create attractive sidebar images. Here’s an example of a few from the the soft cherry blossom blog branding kit:
As of this year, I’ve ran across some articles stating that they are no longer using sidebars. But…in my personal experience, I love them and think they are great for:
- Adding a personal touch to your blog with an author bio and picture
- Are great places to promote your social media pages
- Can be used for lead generation
Sooo that is one of the reasons that I’ve chosen to keep the sidebar on my blog.
#5: Add a professional looking mockup of your lead magnet-opt-ins
One of the easiest ways to increase conversions and encourage peeps to opt in to get your freebies is to mock them up.
Take this eBook cover below from one of of my branding kits. Left as just a regular cover…it really doesn’t do much on the visual side of things.
But, after I mocked it up, it makes the eBook seem more tangible and will increase the likelihood of someone taking me up on the offer.
Big difference right? This is one of the reasons that it’s a great idea to mock up your freebies and opt-ins!
#6: Brand your social media icons
It’s easy to do… using a plugin like the Simple Social Icons plugin if you are using WordPress.
The simple social icon is free to use and makes it easy peasy to add branded social media icons to your sidebar widget. Here’s what it looks like:
As you can see, adding your color codes and links to your social media profiles is easy as pie. Then… the last thing to do is add it to your sidebar to brand your blog.
#7. Use a Done for you Branding Kit (Shameless plug)
